The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia was established by the UN in 1993, to bring justice to the victims of the war in the Balkan region in 1991. The Tribunal prosecutes the key figures in the war, who were in charge. The Tribunal has set precedents on decisions on genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. This means that even a very senior position doesn't guarantee imunity from these serious crimes.
The most famous cases of the Tribunal are those against Slobodan Milošević, who died while he was in detention, Radovan Karadžić, whose trial is ongoing in 2011. Ratko Mladić is also indicted by the tribunal, and was arrested on May 26, 2011.
The Tribunal is expected to finish all cases in 2014, and will then be shut down.
