The best music videos of the past year are honored at the MTV Video Music Awards (VMA's). Held annually every September since 1984, this ceremonial show is known for its outrageous performances, which can sometimes overshadow the award-giving itself. 


MTV, whose original purpose was to broadcast music videos 24 hours a day, conceived the VMA's as the music video equivalent of the Grammy's or the Oscar's.


During the 1991 awards show, the MTV Video Vanguard Award was renamed the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, in recognition of his contribution to the art of music videos. Jackson injected more creativity into the process by composing a storyline to fit with the music. 


Winners are presented with a miniature statue of an astronaut, a tribute to MTV's debut on television screens involving a montage of the Apollo 11 moon landing.
