The National Board of Review of Motion Pictures was created in 1909 in New York City and its current mission is to support domestic and foreign films, "as both art and entertainment".
Throughout the year, a group of filmmakers, academics and students view and discuss over 250 studio, independent, foreign-language, animated and documentary films. At the end of each year, the members of the Board receive a list of all films screened accompanied by the final ballots which will determine the winners of the awards.
According to the organization's website, the National Board of Review "celebrates the distinctive voice of the individual artist, honoring excellence and supporting freedom of expression in film."
