Earth Hour is an annual global event at which hundreds of millions of households, businesses and governments around the world turn off their lights for one hour in order to call attention to the need of action on climate change.
It is the biggest environmental event ever held and organized by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
Earth Hour was organized for the first time in Sydney in 2006 by WWF-Australia. A year later already 2.2 million residents of Sydney participated in the event.
It became a worldwide act of environmental awareness in 2008, when almost 400 cities in 35 countries decided to take part. Currently, people from around 135 countries turn off their lights during Earth Hour.
