On this day in 1950, Robert Schuman proposed the creation of an organised Europe, which would be responsible for the maintenance of peaceful relations in Europe. 


Annually, Europeans commemorate the proposal, best known as Schuman Declaration, which is considered the beginning of the creation of what is now the European Union.

Europe Day, one of the symbols of the EU designed to foster unity among Europeans, is a celebration of peace and unity in Europe.
