The International Day for Biological Diversity is celebrated annually to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues.
The day was initiated on December 29, 1993, by the UN General Assembly, on the same day on which the Convention for Biological Diversity entered into force.
The official commemoration date was changed to May 22 in the year 2000 due to difficulties in organizing events on the original date but also partly due to the adoption of the text of the convention.
Every year, the celebrations of the day are organized around a different theme.
