The International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is celebrated.
On 16 september 1987, the Montreal Protocol was established as an international treaty to protect the ozone layer against the use of substances which destroy it, such as halogenated hydrocarbons.
After a number of revisions, the Protocol was ratified by most countries, making it one of the most succcessful pieces of environmental legislation ever.
