California bans shark fin soup

The Californian legislative ban on the consumption of shark fin soup goes into effect today.
The measure will ban the sale, purchase or possession in California of the predator's fins which are the chief ingredient in a soup dish that has long been part of Chinese culture.
The bill has been argued as somewhat inconsistent while it still permits the consumption of shark steaks.
Shark fins can sell up to $600 per pound which has only added fuel to the fire in the fin collecting frenzy. While the fin is removed, the animal is almost always left to die bleeding.
