The parliamentary republic of Syria, as we know it now, became independent in April 1946.
It was the biggest Arab state to come out of the ex-Ottoman Arab Levant. After the First World War, Syria was established as a French mandate.
During its independence between 1949-1971, many military coups rocked the country and during the 1958-1961 period it was in a short union with Egypt.
The Emergency Law which came in force in 1963 led to a suspension in the majority of constitutional protections of citizens and thus transformed the governmental system into a non-democratic one. This situation led to the Syrian uprising, which followed the Arab Spring.
