Syrian Arab Republic Independence Day 2014
The parliamentary republic of Syria, as we know it now, became independent in April 1946.
It was the biggest Arab state to come out of the ex-Ottoman Arab Levant. After the First World War, Syria was established as a French mandate.
The Emergency Law which came in force in 1963 led to a suspension in the majority of constitutional protections of citizens and thus transformed the governmental system into a non-democratic one. This situation led to the Syrian uprising, which followed the Arab Spring.
