The Maverick Surf Contest returns with 24 of the world's greatest big wave surfers at Pillar Point Harbor, just 20 minutes south of San Francisco and nearby the town Half Moon Bay.
The location, also known as Maverick's, is famous for its big waves caused by an unusual rock formation on the sea floor. The waves can crest at more than 8 metres and rise as high as 24 metres at times. Several surfers have died riding the big waves.
The contest was first held in 1999, but called off for several years recently because of unfavourable weather and water conditions. The official title of the contest is now "Mavericks Invitational".
