The New Year's Day swim is a tradition to start the new year in a refreshing way. People around the world take a dip in the sea, lake or river despite the low temperatures of the water.
In some countries the New Year's Day swim is an organized event that attracts many people. Every year the New Year's Dive in Scheveningen, the Netherlands attracts around 10.000 people. Scheveningen is one of the 89 locations in the Netherlands where people take a dip.
In Canada these dives are called Polar Bear Swims. They take place in numerous communities across the country. In Vancouver, BC's Polar Bear Swim Club has been active since 1920 and has some 1.000 to 2.000 registered participants, although the number of unregistered swimmers is usually around 10.000.
