North Koreans celebrate 100 years have passed since the birth of Kim Il- sung, the first leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
Kim Il- sung, who has been dubbed the "Eternal President" in the Constitution, ruled from the founding of North Korea in 1942 until his death in 1994.
A public holiday in North Korea, the Great Leader's birthday is celebrated with various festive activities including military and civilian marches. North Korea will also inaugurate the country's first DPRK light water nuclear reactor and open a new 105-floor hotel as a tribute to the late president.
Upon Kim Il-sung's death in 1994, the scepter passed to his son, Kim Jong-il.
