New Berlin airport opens to public after delays

Berlin Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt (BER) opens its doors to the public more than two years later than originally planned after a series of delays.
The airport was initially expected to open in late 2011. After several postponements and complications, the opening date was set to October 2013, but was further postponed due to fire safety reasons.
The operators needed additional time to complete a fire safety system that required more safety checks to ensure the full functionality of the terminal buildings in case of an emergency.
The new airport is located in Schönefeld on the border of Berlin and Brandenburg. With the capacity of handling up to 27 million passengers a year it will become the third busiest airport in Germany.

Berlin Brandenburg Airport will replace three airports in Berlin; Tempelhof Airport, which closed in 2008 and Tegel Airport, which is set to close its doors once the new airport becomes operational.
Schönefeld Airport will close its terminals in 2013 as well, although some of the airport's infrastructure will be incorporated into the expanding Berlin Brandenburg Airport.
