Croatia becomes the 28th member of the European Union. Croatia is the second country of former Yugoslavia, after Slovenia, to enter the European Union.


Croatia submitted its EU membership application in 2003 and has held the status of a candidate country since June 2004. The negotiations ended to an Accession Treaty signed by the 27 members and by Croatia on December 9, 2011. The treaty was ratified by the Croatian people with a Referendum held on January 22, 2012.
