Former Bosnian Serb army chief Ratko Mladic refuses to make a statement on the first day of his trial at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY).
His lawyers have also announced they will not make any public announcements on the opening day, which will therefore only feature the prosecutors.
Mladic, accused of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes, made a first appearance before the ICTY on June 3, 2011. At his second appearance a month later, Mladic entered a non-guilty plea.
Mladic was arrested on 26 May 2011, sixteen years after his conviction by the ICTY. His arrest is seen as one of the greatest successes for the tribunal.
