Started in 1972 by the UN, the annual World Environment Day has since then grown to be the biggest and most widely celebrated global day for environmental action.
The 2012 World Environment Day is celebrated under the theme "Green Economy: Does it include you?".
The host country for 40th celebrations of the day is Brazil, which will also host the key UN conference on sustainable development, Rio+20, later in the month.
