Lawyers of the convicted Indian surgeon Jayant Patel appear in court today as their client’s application to an appeal is heard at an Australian High Court.
Jayant Patel, also known as ‘Doctor Death’, was a surgeon at the Bundaberg Base Hospital in Queensland, Australia, accused of gross incompetence while working there.
He was then involved in a scandal after Patel was convicted of 3 counts of manslaughter and one count of grievous bodily harm and sentenced to 7 years in jail, back in June 2010.
Patel took his case to the Court of Appeal in Brisbane early last year, where he sought to have his conviction overturned. However, the appeal was dismissed, as was a cross-appeal by Queensland's attorney-general to have his sentence increased.
