The Supreme Court of Pakistan hears the petition filed by retired Air Marshal Asghar Khan to investigate a 23-year-old court case. According to this case the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Pakistan's secret service, was found involved in funding a couple of political parties in Pakistan in order to counter Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) in the 1990s.
Asghar Khan has recently joined the political party Tehreek e Insaf (PTI), which is rapidly becoming the third major political force in Pakistan. The chairman of PTI also supports the hearing of the petition by the Supreme Court.
Among the politicians who took money from ISI is the current leader of the Pakistan Muslim League (PML). Therefore, the case could hurt the credibility of PML and this is the reason why PML claims that PTI is backed by the establishment of Pakistan. Senior politician of the PML and current opposition leader in the National Assembly, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, has said that if the Supreme Court is going to hear such an old case it should also look into the present role of ISI in the domestic politics of Pakistan.
