The White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) holds its annual dinner for members. WHCA is the organization of journalists who cover the White House and the President of the United States.
Established in 1920, the traditional dinner is attended by the President, the First Lady and Vice President, as well as many senior government officials and members of the press corps. At the dinner excellent and aspiring journalists are rewarded with awards and scholarships.
The dinner was a male-only affair until 1962, when President John F. Kennedy refused to attend unless the ban on women was dropped.
