United Nations convene the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, also known as Rio+20 or Rio 2012.
Sustainable development has become a priority for the UN and Rio+20 is considered a milestone in the chain of UN conferences since 1992, when United Nations Conference on Environment and Development took place.
The conference aims at securing political attention and commitment for global sustainable development.
Preservation of natural sources for future generations; and elimination of poverty and social injustice are the main concerns of the UN and thus define the two main themes of the conference:
1. Green economy within the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication.
2. Institutional framework for sustainable development.
