Christchurch commemorates the 2011 earthquake with a memorial service in North Hagley Park.

During the service, the community is to play a central role. School children provide musical accompaniment and Christchurch Earthquake Awards are given to recognise the bravery of those affected. At 12.51pm, two minutes of silence are held to honour the memory of the 182 victims of the earthquake.

The earthquake that hit Christchurch in 2011 had a destructive magnitude of 6.3 and was located 10 kilometres south-east of Christchurch, New Zealand's second-most populated city.

It hit the city a mere six months after the earthquake in Canterbury, which had a magnitude of 7.1. Though stronger, the Canterbury earthquake did not cause any fatalities.

The total cost of rebuilding the damage done by the two major earthquakes is estimated to exceed NZ$20–30 billion.
