The annual World Press Photo contest offers the most recognized awards in the world of professional press photography and photojournalism.
The contest is organized by the World Press Photo organization, an independent not-for-profit based in Amsterdam. It was founded in 1955 with the objective to support professional press photography on a wide international scale, thus hoping to stimulate and develop high professional standards in photojournalism.
The awards ceremony and exhibition of the winning photographs is held in Amsterdams' Oude Kerk, before these are assembled into a travelling exhibition that is visited by over a million people in 40 countries.
The most prestigious award is the World Press Photo of the Year, which is awarded to the image that "is not only the photojournalistic encapsulation of the year, but represents an issue, situation or event of great photojournalistic importance, and does so in a way that demonstrates an outstanding level of visual perception and creativity." The Photo of the Year is chosen from thousands of submissions and the creator of the winning shot receives a $10,000 cash prize.
In addition, photographs are awarded for various categories including general news, sports action, contemporary issues, daily life, portraits, entertainment and nature.
