Cinemas in Madurai, supported by the Film Federation in India go on strike to protest against a new service tax of 10.3 per cent for theatre owners.

Exhibitors have to also cope with the current increase of film display and maintenance costs, lack of visitors, pirated VCDs and power cuts.

Additionally, the state government requires another entertainment tax of 30 per cent.

Now there are 25 cinemas in Madurai. This is half the number they used to be. The proposed tax may result in many of them closing down or running at a loss.
