The Brit Awards take place, recognized as the most significant event of the year for the British music industry and considered to be the equivalent to the American Grammy Awards.
The ceremony took place for the first time in 1977 and became an annual event by 1982 once it came under the auspices of the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), the trade association for the British music industry. The first ceremony saw The Beatles win multiple awards, including that of best British album for Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band.
Robbie Williams holds the record for most Brit awards received, having won a total of 12 as a solo artist and another 5 during his time with the band Take That.
A counterpart event is also organized every year, called the Classic Brit Awards and dedicated only to classical music.
