The trial, in the case of ten Somali pirates charged with hijacking a cargo ship east of Oman in April 2011, resumes today.
The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company ship MV Arrilah was loaded with aluminium and was on its way from Australia to Jebel Ali in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Special UAE counter-terrorism units liberated the ship after one day in coordination with the US Fifth Fleet, which is responsible for naval forces in the Persian Gulf, Red Sea, Arabian Sea and the coast of East Africa.
The rescue action was claimed to be in line with UAE commitment to combat piracy.
The trial has been adjourned after the first hearing early in March, as the defendants, who could face a death or life sentence, appeared in court without a lawyer.
