On the first day of the Tibetan New Year, Tibetans observe a hunger strike out of solidarity for the Tibetan victims of recent police firings and self-immolations.
In recent weeks, more Tibetans have set their bodies on fire in protest of China's occupation of Tibet, bringing the number of self-immolations to 23, according to the Central Tibetan Administration.
The celebration of Losar, the Tibetan name for New Year, predates the advent of Buddhism in Tibet. Though originally a spiritual winter ceremony, with offerings of incense meant to appease local spirits, Losar is now the most important Buddhist festival.
