The Tibetan New Year, or Losar, is the main holiday in Tibet. This year the calendar is going to show 2140.


The celebration stems from the Bön period and was originally a spiritual winter ceremony, with offerings of incense meant to appease local spirits. With the advent of Buddhism however, Losar evolved into a farmer's festival celebrating the arts of cultivation, irrigation and building bridges. 


Though Losar is a 15-day celebration, the official festivities begin on the twenty-ninth day of the twelfth month of the Tibetan calendar.
