The unions believe the measures to be 'undemocratic in both form and substance'. European Trade Union Confederation claims that austerity measures only cause social damage, animosity to the EU and promotion of nationalistic movements, and therefore cannot be considered the best solution to the crisis.
Instead, the Confederation proposes a strategy based on, for instance, the greater involvement of the European Central Bank, tax on financial transactions, the introduction of eurobonds, protection of enterprises, etc.
Trade Union Confederation has called on all its members - 82 trade union organisations in 36 European states and 12 industry federations - to take part in this day and support its message.
