The US Environmental Protection Agency finalizes delayed standards on emissions from oil and gas drilling operations.

The standards were to be finished on 28 February. The agency, however, claimed it needed extra time to 'review the comments'. Environmental groups have agreed to give EPA 35 extra days to finalize the rules on drilling in order to reduce air pollution.

A draft rule on emissions from oil and gas has been issued in July 2011. According to this draft, the emissions would need to be cut by 25 percent across the oil and gas industry. This means that energy companies would be forced to add pollution control technologies to their operations.

The Republicans and polluters, however, attacked the agency and claimed that its rules would deprive people of jobs and burden the oil and gas industry with extra costs which may lead to a a decline in business recovery.
