Partial elections commence for 48 seats in both national and regional assemblies in which Aung San Suu Kyi participates for the first time.
Suu Kyi is a politician and General Secretary for the National League of Democracy. Her openly democratic stance on politics has once resulted in her 15 year house arrest as an oppressing initiative by opposing political parties.
The European Union are looking forward to lifting sanctions should the elections go fair and smoothly keeping in mind that there is still a lack of economic development in rural areas.
During a meeting attended by EU delegates which took place in Rangoon, Werner Langen of the EU Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee said he found Burma's recent moves towards democracy "very impressive".
In fact, sanctions on the Burmese nation are already in the process of being lifted. The last decision, taken by EU delegates on the Burma issue on January 23, concluded that travel bans should be lifted against the nations leaders.
