The Arab League currently consist of 21 countries, after Syria was suspended form the league due to excessive violence during the Arab Spring. However, the Syrian opposition umbrella organization, the Syrian National Coalition, will attend this year's summit and will be offered a seat formerly occupied by Damascus.
The purpose of the summit is it to "draw closer the relations between member states and co-ordinate collaboration between them, to safeguard their independence and sovereignty, and to consider in a general way the affairs and interests of the Arab countries".
The main objective of the summit is to ensure that the league is fulfilling its purpose.
The summit was preceded by the meeting of Economic and Social Council on both senior officials and ministerial level, held on March 21-22.
The league's council of foreign ministers met on March 24.
