Vladimir Putin assumes the office to serve his third term ever as Russian President.
Putin was elected to become Medvedev's successor in the first round of presidential elections on 4 of March. The outcome of the elections was considered controversial by many.

Putin was accused of results manipulation after gaining over 63 percent of the votes. His election has been opposed by thousands of protesters since the day the results were announced.
Putin was first elected as president in 2000 and after being re-elected in 2004, served two presidential terms until 2008. Following the presidency, he was elected Russia's Prime Minister.
