In Asia's biggest Roman Catholic state, in villages near the capital Manila, every year on Good Friday devoted Catholics volunteer to be whipped and crucified in public in order to re-enact Jesus Christ's sufferings.


Dozens of men are whipped till they bleed and then carry wooden crosses weighing nearly 50 kg.


This ritual is frowned upon by the church and authorities try to discourage people from participating in it.
