The Indian Ocean Navy Symposium (IONS) takes place to enhance maritime security and cooperation in the Indian Ocean.


The event is biennially attended by the the chiefs of navies from all Indian Ocean region states.


The symposium's purpose is to promote a shared understanding on maritime security issues among the participating states. It is designed to develop strategies for cooperation and improve security in the long run through reaching multinational maritime agreements, which are hoped to come out of the event.
