Bataan Day is an annual national day to commemorate the fall of the Philippines' province Bataan to Japan on 9 April 1942.
Many Filipinos walk parts of the route that 90,000 to 100,000 American and Filipino war prisoners captured by the Japanese had to walk in the early stages of the Second World War. They pay homage to the victims of this Bataan Death March.
Starting from Mariveles in the southern part of Bataan, the prisoners were forced to march 88 km to San Francisco, from where they went to Capas by train. From Capas they had to walk another 13 km to Camp O'Donnell.
Only 54,000 prisoners reached the camp. The deprivations during the Bataan Death March caused 7,000 to 10,000 deaths. The rest of the prisoners were able to escape in the jungle.
An Allied military commission later judged that the march was a Japanese war crime.
