The Bataan Death March is commemorating its 70th anniversary. Several memorial marches are being hold by the Filipinos.
Moreover, a ceremony is held at the national Bataan shrine and will be attended by Filipino President Benigno Aquino and survivors of the death march.
Most survivors of the march are currently in their 80s. The oldest survivor, Albert Brown, died last August at an age of 105.
The Bataan Death March is commemorated annually at Bataan Day. It is a national day in the Philippines to remember the fall of the Philippines' province Bataan to Japan on 9 April 1942.
At Bataan Day many Filipinos walk parts of the route that 90,000 to 100,000 American and Filipino war prisoners captured by the Japanese had to walk in the early stages of the Second World War. They pay homage to the victims of this Bataan Death March.
