The World Book and Copyright Day is an annual event organized by UNESCO.
It aims to pay a world-wide tribute to books and authors, to encourage everyone, and particularly young people, to read and to promote acknowledgement for the contribution that certain books have provided to the social and cultural progress of humanity.
The World Book and Copyright Day was celebrated for the first time in 1995.
The date of April 23 was, however, already connected to books in 1923, when booksellers in Spain decided to honour the author Miguel de Cervantes who died on that day.
