The 474-year old painting Christ Carrying the Cross Dragged By A Rascal by the famous Italian artist Girolamo de Romani is auctioned off. The painting was stolen by Nazis during World War II but has been returned to the six heirs of the original owner.
The original owner Frederico Gentili di Giuseppe, an Italian Jew, stole the artwork himself during the French occupation. After Gentili passed away in 1940 of natural causes and his children had left the country, the Nazis appropriated 70 objects from his collection, including the painting.
The million-dollar-worth masterpiece shows Christ wearing a thorny crown, dressed in a red silk robe, while carrying a cross. It dates back to circa 1538 and has been insured for $2,5 million.
