Vladimir Putin quits as the leader of United Russia, following his inauguration as president.


Putin has held the position of party leader since its founding in 2008 but has now recommended Dmitry Medvedev to replace him. 


According to Liberal Democrat Maksim Rokhmistrov, the swap will make no difference to the course of the country since behind the scenes United Russia has been run by Putin and Medvedev anyway.
