The mismatch with the Catholic date for the holiday, which is 23 April, is due to the fact that Orthodox Churches follow the Julian calendar and 23 April is 6 May according to the Gregorian calendar.
6 may or or 23 April is generally acknowledged as St. George's death in AD 303.
In some countries like Bulgaria it is also a very common Name day, and a national holiday as it commemorates the army. Families roast lamb on the day, which originates from the ancient pagan tradition.
