Chernobyl shelter completed

The construction of an enormous shelter covering the remains of the Chernobyl reactor is completed.
The arch, big enough to contain the Statue of Liberty in New York, makes it possible to start the dismantling of the reactor and the cleaning of radioactive material in and around the area.
The old sarcophagus covering the reactor was built a couple of months after the Chernobyl explosion in 1986. Experts said it would last till 2006, but it took until the 26th anniversary of the explosion in 2012 before the construction work started.
Recently, the old sarcophagus started showing cracks in its walls leading to concerns that the structure might soon collapse.
The Chernobyl explosion is the worst nuclear accident in the world. On 26 April 1986, a cloud of radiation was spewed out over a large part of the Northern Hemisphere.
The explosion forced hundreds of thousands of people to leave their homes in the worst hit areas in Ukraine, Belarus and Western Russia. Many people have suffered from the high level of radiation, causing deaths and cancer.
