International conference on anti-missile systems
|
|
Participants from 50 states attend the International conference on anti-missile systems held by the Russian Defense Ministry.
The objective of the conference is to provide a platform to openly discuss issues concerning the deployment of anti-missile systems around the world.
The proposed US-led missile shield in Europe, which has caused great tensions between Russia and the US, will be one of the main points of discussion.
In 2010, an agreement was reached between the two countries to build the European missile defense network. Russia, however, demanded legally binding guarantees that the missile shield will not be directed against it, something Washington has refused to provide.
The conference participants include defense ministers of NATO member states and former Soviet Republics (CIS), as well as representatives from China, South Korea and Japan. Representatives from the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) countries will also attend.
