The hearing was adjourned due to a request by BP to delay any further juridical action until it decides whether to grant final approval to a settlement, which the company reached with the attorneys representing individuals and businesses affected by the spill.
The final report on the cause of the oil spill placed the blame on the oil concern and its partners. The reasons lay in a series of cost-cutting decisions and a failure to ensure the drilling unit safety.

If the US government succeeds to prove gross negligence on the part of BP, the damages the oil giant will have to pay may triple to reach $21 billion.
BP, however, has denied the claims. The oil concern "believes it was not grossly negligent and looks forward to presenting evidence on this issue at trial in January," as the company said in a statement.
