The judges will decide on the request of counselor Irwin Kanhai, who is advocating the main suspect and current President of Suriname Desi Bouterse, whether to dismiss the public prosecutor.
If the court accepts the request, the trial will be dismissed and Bouterse will be a free man.
December Murders is the name given to the execution of fifteen opponents of the military rule in 1982. President Desi Bouterse, who was the leader of the military at the time, was put on trial in early 2012, during which one of the witnesses testified that Bouterse killed two of the fifteen men himself. However, on 4 April the Surinamese parliament passed a law which gave Bouterse an amnesty for the murders.
