The General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) is a regional international organization whose members are the thirty-five independent states of the American continent.
Each year a different country is host to the summit, in which the member states cover themes regarding the action and policy of the organization, in addition to considering the cooperation and the economic and political relations among the member states.
The OAS is the world's oldest regional organization dating back to the First International Conference of American States, held in Washington, D.C., from October 1889 to April 1890.
The 2013 edition of the summit focuses on the drug issues permeating the continent, with the theme of the Summit being Toward a Comprehensive Anti-Drug Policy in the Americas.
The OAS General Assembly is expected to consider several approaches towards the drug problem, including the possibility of decriminalization.
