After it has been stated that Guo Yan is suffering from an injury, the world number 1, 21-year-old Ding Ning is taking over her position in China's table tennis women's team for the London 2012 Olympics.
Ding, who topped up the rankings in November 2011, gets to compete in the singles and team events alongside teammate Li Xiaoxia, who used to occupy the first positions in the world tables together with Guo in June 2011.
Ding also won the 2011 world singles in Rotterdam and victoriously rose from third to first place in the classifications.
According to the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) each country is allowed only 2 athletes by ranking in the singles and 3 in the team events. Consequently, in the team competitions Guo gets replaced by ex-world champion Guo Yue.
