India and Pakistan hold talks to discuss their dispute on the Siachen Glacier, a month after an avalanche killed almost 140 Pakistani soldiers on the glacier.

Shortly after the avalanche, Pakistan's Chief of Army Staff Ashfag Parvez Kayani announced that the Pakistani government was open for talks with India to demilitarise Siachen.

According to Kayani, a peaceful coexistence between the two countries is crucial for the safety of the people.

The Siachen area is considered the world's highest battleground. In 1984, India gained control of the glacier, which was previously in Pakistani control, after the successful Operation Meghdoot. Since then, the two countries have maintained permanent military presence in the disputed area, which is located at a height of over 6,000 metres.

The Siachen Glacier is located in the disputed region of Kashmir, in which both India and Pakistan control several parts. A cease-fire in the Siachen area went into effect in 2003.
