The trial of high-profile Bangladeshi Jamaat-e-Islami leader, Ghulam Azam, begins.
Azam has been charged with having committed several crimes, including conspiracy, murder and torture, during the country's 1971 independence struggle against Pakistan. According to independent researchers, around half a million people were killed during the conflict.
The defendant denies the charges, claiming they are politically motivated.

Azam, as well as eight other people from the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party and Jamaat-e-Islami, will be tried by the International Crimes Tribunal, which was set up in order to try Bangladeshis accused of collaborating with Pakistani forces.
