Israeli ID cards to be renewed every 10 years

The Israeli parliamentary committee in charge of new regulations and laws has decided to set expiration time for Israeli identity cards.
Until the change of the regulations, the Israeli identity card, also known as Teudat Zehut, had no expiration date. Israeli citizens had to apply for new identity cards only in case the card was lost or stolen or if it was in a bad condition.
With the new regulations, Israelis must apply for the renewal of their ID cards every ten years. The change does not apply only to the newly issued cards but to older cards as well. People who already own cards will thus have to apply for new ID cards in ten years.
Every Israeli citizen above the age of sixteen is obligated to carry the identity card with him at all times. A person who fails to provide an officer of the law with his ID card could be fined by law.
