The 9th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) brings together the heads of state and government of the 48 partner countries from Asia and Europe. The theme of the 9th Asia-Europe Meeting is 'Friends for Peace, Partners for Prosperity'. 


The agenda of the ASEM 9 includes topics such as "food and energy security, sustainable development, financial and economic crisis, climate change, natural disaster response, socio-cultural cooperation and future direction of ASEM".


Since its creation in 1996 at the Bangkok Summit, ASEM has expanded its membership and has addressed a large array of themes from economic and financial crisis, natural disasters and outbreaks of infectious diseases and to addressing high prices of food and energy and climate change.
